using libavcodec on cygwin, and ability to use ffmpeg to edit video

John Zhang-3
Hi,

I have a couple of newbie questions regarding ffmpeg/libavcodec.

1. I wonder if anyone can provide some pointers on installing
ffmpeg/libavcodec on cygwin. I'm trying to compile some tutorial source
files but they often result in a large number of error messages such as
"undefined reference to...".

2. I'm uncertain if ffmpeg is the best package for what I wish to do. I'm
afraid I haven't been able to find a lot of documentation and sample code,
and I was wondering if it would be possible to extract and edit frames and
re-encode video using libavcodec.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

John

The easiest route is to install the ffmpeg and libav* binary packages from
Cygwin Ports.
If you compiled ffmpeg from source, you need to use 'make install' and
then rename the DLLs:

  mv cygavutil-49.6.0.dll cygavutil-49.dll
  mv cygavcodec-51.49.0.dll cygavcodec-51.dll
  mv cygavformat-52.3.0.dll cygavformat-52.dll
  mv cygavdevice-52.0.0.dll cygavdevice-52.dll
  mv cygswscale-0.5.0.dll cygswscale-0.dll
  mv cygavfilter-0.0.0.dll cygavfilter-0.dll

Make sure you installed the DLLs somewhere in your linking path.

Yes, it is possible. I'd suggest to start with Taki's tutorials:
http://issaris.org/~takis/projects/ffmpeg/docs/

Re: using libavcodec on cygwin, and ability to use ffmpeg to edit video

John Zhang-3
Hey, thanks for the suggestions! Cygwin Ports works great!

One more question though, has av_free() been replaced in avcodec.h in the
latest release? Sample files which use av_free() fail to compile unless the
lines are removed (though I fear this probably introduces serious memory
leaks).

Thanks again and happy holidays!

Dear :
I also want to cross compile ffmpeg to WinCE code.
I have downloaded cygwin and arm-wince-mingw32ce .
Could you tell me how to do it ?
The URL below can't be opened.

jersingsu.tw
Hi:
Sorry, I didn't find any information about how to
compile WinCE code using arm-wince-mingw32ce and
Cygwin.

Could you tell me other useful information about how
to compile WinCE code ?

Thanks !!!

In reply to this post by Víctor Paesa
I build ffmpeg :
$ ./configure --cross-compile
--cross-prefix=/usr/local/wince/mingw32ce/arm-win
ce-mingw32ce/bin/ --arch=armv4l --target-os=mingw32

--disable-encoders --disab
le-decoders --disable-parsers --disable-muxers
--disable-demuxers --enable-pars
er=h263 --enable-encoder=h263 --enable-decoder=h263
--enable-muxer=h263 --enabl
e-demuxer=h263 --disable-ffserver --disable-ffplay
--disable-ffmpeg --disable-n
etwork

config.err:
.....................
BEGIN /tmp/ffmpeg-conf-8681-3968-4213.c
END /tmp/ffmpeg-conf-8681-3968-4213.c
/usr/local/wince/mingw32ce/arm-wince-mingw32ce/bin/gcc
-mno-cygwin -fomit-frame-pointer -c -o
/tmp/ffmpeg-conf-29704-3968-10397.o
/tmp/ffmpeg-conf-8681-3968-4213.c
gcc: error trying to exec 'cc1': execvp: No such file

C compiler test failed.

It's the same error after I copy the cc1 to the same
directory with gcc.

Could you give me someone hint to solve this issue ?
Thanks a lot !!!

Re: using libavcodec on cygwin, and ability to use ffmpeg to edit video

jersingsu.tw
Hi--
Sorry,Maybe I am not polite or make mistakes in the
last emails. I apologize for that.
Could you still give me some answer for my question ?

I tried:
$ ./configure --cross-compile --arch=armv4l
--target-os=mingw32 --enable-memali
gn-hack --enable-shared --disable-static
--extra-cflags=-mno-cygwin --extra-lib
s=-mno-cygwin --disable-ipv6
--cross-prefix=/usr/local/wince/mingw32ce/arm-winc
e-mingw32ce/bin/ --prefix=/usr/local/wince --log=yes
--disable-encoders --disab
le-decoders --disable-parsers --disable-muxers
--disable-demuxers --enable-pars
er=h263 --enable-encoder=h263 --enable-decoder=h263
--enable-muxer=h263 --enabl
e-demuxer=h263 --disable-ffserver --disable-ffplay
--disable-ffmpeg --disable-n
etwork
./configure: line 184: pr: command not found
/usr/local/wince/mingw32ce/arm-wince-mingw32ce/bin/gcc
is unable to create an executable file.
C compiler test failed.

config.err:
gcc: error trying to exec 'cc1': execvp: No such file
or directory
C compiler test failed.

Could you tell me where the path I should install in ?
Or what others I should modify ?

Thanks a lot !!!
Jersing

They will not answer you until you do two things:

When it is a new question, write an email to [hidden email]
(do not reply to another email on a different question).

Add your reply AFTER the other person's text.

According to this reference:
http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/legal.html
"FFmpeg is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
However, FFmpeg incorporates several optional modules that are covered
by the GNU General Public License (GPL), notably libpostproc and
libswscale." You should definitely learn what these Licenses mean. These
references may help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGPL
http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU%E5%AE%BD%E9%80%9A%E7%94%A8%E5%85%AC%E5%85%B1%E8%AE%B8%E5%8F%AF%E8%AF%81

The very basic idea is, you can use the free stuff, but you can't SELL
what you make with it. Whatever you make, it must be free too.

I don't agree. According to the GPL faq, you can even sell GPL-based
software, as long as it is GPL too.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLCommercially
/
"You are allowed to sell copies of the modified program commercially,
but only under the terms of the GNU GPL. Thus, for instance, you must
make the source code available to the users of the program as described
in the GPL, and they must be allowed to redistribute and modify it as
described in the GPL. /

/These requirements are the condition for including the GPL-covered code
you received in a program of your own."/

Of course; but given the nature of the question "should I be paying for
this" I thought it was more important to get across the fundamental
concept that you can't start using LGPL stuff in normal* commercial
software. Clearly the OP doesn't live in a LGPL world, and probably has
no intention of entering it.

Once the shock has settled in, he can check the references I provided
for the gory details, such as the one you pointed out.

* It's very easy to say "yes, but..."; I can already feel people itching
to type back at me "what's not normal about Red Hat???" ;-)

There's a place for covering corner cases and exceptions, such as legal
documents and software... but sometimes it's best to focus on the big
picture.

IMHO ;-)

I think you missed the point. jersingsu.tw's grasp of English is not
very strong and from what I can see, he misinterpreted the idiomatic
phrase "buys you nothing" earlier in the thread as an implication that
he needs to pay for something.

Brilliant! How did I miss that ??? All I posted in this thread is now
irrelevant, I wish I could cancel it. Maybe we should explain to
jersingsu.tw using simple english.
