libass cannot be detected in centos 7

Brainiarc7
Hello there,

I'm building ffmpeg on centos 7 and one issue keeps cropping up:

libass. Yes, its' installed. But ffmpeg's ./configure stage won't detect it.

Configuration:

cd /opt/software
git clone https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg -b master
cd FFmpeg
PATH="/opt/ffmpeg/bin:$PATH" PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/ffmpeg/lib/pkgconfig"
./configure \
  --prefix="/opt/ffmpeg" \
  --pkg-config-flags="--static" \
  --extra-cflags="-I/opt/ffmpeg/include" \
  --extra-ldflags="-L/opt/ffmpeg/lib" \
  --bindir="/opt/ffmpeg/bin" \
  --enable-cuda-sdk \
  --enable-cuvid \
  --enable-libnpp \
  --extra-cflags="-I/usr/local/cuda/include/" \
  --extra-ldflags=-L/usr/local/cuda/lib64/ \
  --enable-gpl \
  --enable-version3 \
  --enable-libass \
  --enable-libfdk-aac \
  --enable-libx264 \
  --enable-libx265 \
  --enable-libmp3lame \
  --enable-libopus \
  --enable-libvorbis \
  --enable-libvpx \
  --extra-libs="-lpthread -lm" \
  --enable-nvenc \
  --enable-nonfree
PATH="/opt/ffmpeg/bin:$PATH" make -j$(nproc) VERBOSE=1
make -j$(nproc) uninstall
make -j$(nproc) distclean
hash -r

Log:

ERROR: libass not found using pkg-config

If you think configure made a mistake, make sure you are using the latest
version from Git.  If the latest version fails, report the problem to the
[hidden email] mailing list or IRC #ffmpeg on irc.freenode.net.
Include the log file "ffbuild/config.log" produced by configure as this
will help
solve the problem.

Config log attached below.

Further info:

1. pkg-config --libs --cflags freetype2
-I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/include/libpng15  -lfreetype

2.    pkg-config --libs --cflags fribidi
-I/usr/include/fribidi  -lfribidi

3. pkg-config --libs --cflags libass
-I/usr/include/harfbuzz -I/usr/include/fribidi -I/usr/include/freetype2
-I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib64/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/include/uuid

did you install libass or libass-devel and if you installed libass-devel
why don't you mention it not instead waste others time?

These packages are already installed.

If you feel this is a waste of your time, don't bother replying to it then.

Could be because not everyone knows they _need_ to install a -devel package;
further, not all libs/etc even have -devel packages anyway (all the headers
come with the base package).

And it's hardly a waste of time to read a and ignore a simple email like
that (or this).

well, when i started compile something from source i did my homework 15
years ago where internet was expensive and these days people insist
doing things at their own but don't bother about millions of howtos and

Reindl,

Stop assuming the reason that what you'd expect for a "perfect response" to
an issue facing a user stems from laziness.
I'm not here to stoke your massive ego.
Outside this forum, you're NO ONE. Stick to what you know and contribute to
WHAT you can fix.

For the version information:

rpm -q libass-devel
libass-devel-0.13.4-6.el7.x86_64

Carl, thanks for the assistance. I'll install the missing package and
retest.

Cool, when I started building-from-source most software was distributed on
9-track magtape and IP was a fairly new thing. So what.

Well, this list often insists that questioners use the latest git version
and not something even a week old. This pushes people who can install a
prebuilt package to try compiling when they really don't know how, so they
make mistakes. You can help them learn (as Carl just did) or maybe just say
nothing.

Hello Carl,

Installing the bzip2-devel package fixed the issue. Thanks once again :-)

Then why did you? If you hadn't made the first comment about "wasting time",
we wouldn't have continued most of this thread. OTOH it's been somewhat
amusing.

amusing - you aren't even capable to distinct who said what within 10
messages

I did, you missed it early on in the thread.

No, I didn't. Go back and read my first message and who I quoted- it wasn't
the OP, it was someone named "Reindl Harald". My response to them directly,
and AFAICT accurately, addressed both of that person's points and how _they_
had assumed the OP made a specific mistake, an assumption which turned out
to be incorrect.

With that, I'm done; apparently you don't understand that some (many?)
readers of this list aren't super-experienced developers or how the language
of question/response works.

you quoted the OP here - period - it#s that simple

"Then why did you? If you hadn't made the first comment about 'wasting
time'" was directly targetd to the OP and you even are not clever enough
to realize it
