ffmpeg syntax for mp4 that is usable with qt-faststart?

Kelly Mercie

Hello.

I have tried a couple of encoding but could never get them to work with qt-faststart.

It always gives me:
filename.avi: Success

but that doesn't do anything.

Could anyone give me a syntax that would provided a mp4 file with h264 codec and aac audio that would work with qt-faststart so that it could be able to fast start when streaming?

Thank you.

Hi Kelly,

I've just  successfully used the following to create QuickTime mov files,
with h264 video and aac audio from a wmv input file. I guess not strictly
the mp4 avi file you might be looking for, but still might be some help.
The resulting file from the second pass (848_Termi_Dyno_runsQT7480x360.mov)
was successfully changed to fast start (qt-faststart) and can be seen online
at:

http://www.kapitalmototv.com/play-177-0.html

ffmpeg -y -i 848_Termi_Dyno_runs.wmv -an -v 1 -threads auto -vcodec libx264
-b 750k -bt 175k -refs 1 -loop 1 -deblockalpha 0 -deblockbeta 0 -parti4x4 1
-partp8x8 1 -me full -subq 1 -me_range 21 -chroma 1 -slice 2 -bf 0 -level 30
-g 300 -keyint_min 30 -sc_threshold 40 -rc_eq 'blurCplx^(1-qComp)' -qcomp
0.7 -qmax 51 -qdiff 4 -i_qfactor 0.71428572 -maxrate 750k -bufsize 2M -cmp 1
-s 480x360 -f mov -pass 1 /dev/null

ffmpeg -y -i 848_Termi_Dyno_runs.wmv -v 1 -threads auto -vcodec libx264 -b
750k -bt 175k -refs 1 -loop 1 -deblockalpha 0 -deblockbeta 0 -parti4x4 1
-partp8x8 1 -me full -subq 6 -me_range 21 -chroma 1 -slice 2 -bf 0 -level 30
-g 300 -keyint_min 30 -sc_threshold 40 -rc_eq 'blurCplx^(1-qComp)' -qcomp
0.7 -qmax 51 -qdiff 4 -i_qfactor 0.71428572 -maxrate 750k -bufsize 2M -cmp 1
-s 480x360 -acodec libfaac -ab 128 -ar 48000 -ac 2 -f mov -pass 2
848_Termi_Dyno_runsQT7480x360.mov

I hope this helps in some way.

Cheers
Phill

I also meant to say that my qt-faststart output looked like this:

$ /home/phillc/ffmpeg/tools/qt-faststart 848_Termi_Dyno_runsQT7480x360.mov
848_Termi_Dyno_runsQT7480x360_2.mov
 patching stco atom...
 patching stco atom...
 writing ftyp atom...
 writing moov atom...
 copying rest of file...

Re: ffmpeg syntax for mp4 that is usable with qt-faststart?

I have tried your syntax for the .mov file but after running qt-faststart I still get the same output:
filename.mov: Success

the qt-faststart file doesn't do anything :(

I have compiled it with:
make qt-faststart

Does the qt-faststart work on 64bit system? I am running CentOS 4.4 x64.

this is *qt* faststart.
if your filename suffix means something, this is an avi file, not a
quicktime one.
common suffixes for qt files are: .mov, .mp4, .3gp, ...
