converting .mov(MJPEG) to web optimized .mp4(h264)

Amila Perera
Hi all,
This is my first mail on this thread.

I need to convert .mov(MJPEG) to .mp4(h264) so that the .mp4 file can be
viewed as html5 video.
Starting from the simplest form "ffmpeg -i 1.mov -vcodec libx264 1.mp4", I
tried several other commands but none of them worked for me.

Mainly, I referred the following sites.
https://www.virag.si/2012/01/web-video-encoding-tutorial-with-ffmpeg-0-9/
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13560852/convert-mp4-to-maximum-mobile-supported-mp4-using-ffmpeg
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15524776/ffmpeg-convert-mov-file-to-mp4-for-html5-video-tag-ie9
http://superuser.com/questions/438390/creating-mp4-videos-ready-for-http-streaming

Could you please guide me as how to achieve the required results with
ffmpeg.

Thank you in advance.

N.B: However I was able to obtain the required results with HandBrake
(convert with 'web optimized' checked) and view it on the browser with no
problem. But my requirement is to achieve the same results with ffmpeg.

In Handbrake you can watch the “Activity Window” and see which command line options are used. Hope it helps.

.mp4 conversion is successful. The file plays quite well on VLC.
But it doesn't play as html5 video on browser, when served through apache.
The same file when converted through HandBrake can be played as html5 video
on browser without any problem.

Thanks Henk for the advice.
I gave a look at the Activity Window, but couldn't find the exact options
that match with ffmpeg.
The log comes out from libhb(handbrake library) and several other libraries.

Re: converting .mov(MJPEG) to web optimized .mp4(h264)

Patrick Fischer-3
In reply to this post by Amila Perera
Im not sure but maybe you need to move the index to the begin of the file.

"-movflags faststart"

The mov/mp4/ismv muxer supports fragmentation. Normally, a MOV/MP4 file
has all the metadata about all packets stored in one location (written
at the end of the file, it can be moved to the start for better playback
by adding faststart to the movflags, or using the |qt-faststart| tool).
A fragmented file consists of a number of fragments, where packets and
metadata about these packets are stored together. Writing a fragmented
file has the advantage that the file is decodable even if the writing is
interrupted (while a normal MOV/MP4 is undecodable if it is not properly
finished), and it requires less memory when writing very long files
(since writing normal MOV/MP4 files stores info about every single
packet in memory until the file is closed). The downside is that it is
less compatible with other applications.

Regards
Patrick

you missed the basics fact that HTML5 needs profile *baseline*

-profile:v baseline

Are you sure? For compatibility with all mobile devices, yes,
plus a few more restrictions. But HTML5 video in general? Desktop
browsers (if they can play MP4) have no problem with high
profile, many mobile devices by now support at least main.

pretty sure and even if you find some random client
payling the file makes it not smarter to play with
fire - AFAIK there are also legal reasons to do so

why not just enter "ffmpeg -i HandBrake-converted-file.mp4" and i bet
Video: h264 (Constrained Baseline) is part of the output

Thanks Reindl.

But I have succeeded viewing Main Profile h.264 video on browser(Chrome/IE
on Windows).
So I think that it is not the underlying problem.

fine, you can tune the low level params that it may appear as Main
but has more properties of Baseline - frankly, Google for the difference
of both, that's only a few flags

however, with the params below i am vonverting videos
now for around 5 years playing fine on *any* device
and *yes* for mobile clients forget anything but baseline

Codec AVOption rc_lookahead (Number of frames to look ahead for alternate reference frame selection) specified for
output file #0 (/dev/null) has not been used for any stream. The most likely reason is either wrong type (e.g. a
video option with no video streams) or that it is a private option of some encoder which was not actually used for
any stream.

Thank you for the reply.

I am using version 2.1.4-1 on Fedora, but it doesn't seem to identify
"-profole:v baseline".

Re: converting .mov(MJPEG) to web optimized .mp4(h264)

Sorry... It was a typo in the mail. I actually used 'profile' in the
command.
Please have a look at my output.
The bold line indicates the error.
Thank you in advance.

Codec AVOption b (set bitrate (in bits/s)) specified for output file #0

either wrong type (e.g. a video option with no video streams) or that it is
a private option of some encoder which was not actually used for any stream.

I am using the latest from RPMFusion repository.
May be I should give a try and build ffmpeg from sources for myself.

Anyway thanks for the help.

i stopped rpmfusion in context of ffmpeg since they broke
MP4 some years ago with the excuse "otherwise we would need
to move it to the non-free-repo and depending packages too"

*but* Fedora 20 has a not that old x264-libs-0.138

my x264-latest lives under /usr/local on the buildmachine
and is statically linked to ffmpeg-latest, in one of my
previous posts you see how ffmpeg is built here

ffmpeg-latest-2.2.4-4.fc20.20140625.rh.x86_64
x264-latest-0.142.2431-3.fc20.20140625.rh.x86_64

This is dead easy to solve!  Add -pix_fmt yuv420p to the command line to
make ffmpeg convert to 4:2:0.

Thank you James.................
Your suggestion solved my problem.

Here is the final command that worked for me.
---
% ffmpeg -i input.mov -profile:v 'baseline' -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 35.0
-vcodec libx264 -acodec libvo_aacenc -ar 48000 -b:a 128k -coder 1
-rc_lookahead 50 -threads 0 lmno.mp4
