Image2 demuxer on Synology

Stuart Bruce
Hello

Out of nowhere I've been tasked with getting a small PHP script running on
a Synology server to generate JPEG thumbnails from h.264 MOV files.

The Synology is about 18 months old and completely 'vanilla', with no
maintenance or updates, and it's still running the 2015-era version of
FFmpeg that was preinstalled on it.

The problem I'm hitting appears to be identical to this one:
https://superuser.com/questions/1375270/ffmpeg-waveform-png-invalid-argument
My own output is posted below- apologies for the formatting- but the key
point seems to be that "--disable-muxer=image2" is in the output, so any
attempt to output a JPEG or PNG file is failing with "not a suitable output
format".

So my questions are...
- On a Synology system, what do I need to do to get the image2 muxer
enabled? Can I change the config of the existing set-up, or do I need to do
a re-install or update of the FFmpeg build?
- If I need to reinstall or update, I'm not familiar with Synology systems-
is there such a thing as a simple guide for FFmpeg installations on
Synology? Google didn't show me any.
- With the image2 demuxer disabled, is there a method for getting the
preinstalled version of FFmpeg to export a JPEG file anyway?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

I found this thread:
https://github.com/SynoCommunity/spksrc/issues/3000
which indicates there exists a special repository for Synology
packages. It provides this:
https://github.com/chanfried/spksrc/releases/tag/ffmpeg-3.4
which is at least a bit newer. The point is: Perhaps its build didn't
disable your required stuff. (I can't find the package's build options
to check.)

You cannot change the existing setup. The availability of features is
within the ffmpeg binary (or rather binary plus ffmpeg libav* libraries).

You may to able to add the quoted repository, or somehow manually
install the provided spk file. (New search terms for Google. ;-))

OTOH, I just noticed that your Synology is an x64_64 system? Just grab
a binary from here:
https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/
(left column, git builds, preferred).

Otherwise, you need to compile ffmpeg for your Synology. Whether you
can compile natively (i.e. on the machine), or you need to
cross-compile, I do not know. (Too lazy to google.) And you may also
need to provide (cross-) compilations of other dependant stuff, if
external libraries are required for your particular features.

We would need to see the output of
$ ffmpeg -encoders
$ ffmpeg -muxers

With the existing options of your ffmpeg binary, you *may* be able to
create a JPEG file with the mjpeg muxer and the mjpeg2jpeg bitstream
filter:

$ ffmpeg -i input -frames:v 1 -bsf mjpeg2jpeg -f mjpeg output.jpg

(I did test this, but not sure whether the result is a proper JPEG
file, or rather an MJPEG stream with a single frame.)

No chance for a PNG though, as far I can tell.

HTH,
cheers,
Moritz

Appears doable. I've posted an answer at
https://superuser.com/questions/1375270/ffmpeg-waveform-png-invalid-argument

Nice! Maybe worth a wiki entry.

Re: Image2 demuxer on Synology

Stuart Bruce
In reply to this post by Gyan
Hello

Thanks very much Gyan and Moritz for your prompt replies.

If there is a way to get this working with the existing Synology set-up
without any re-installation, that would definitely be preferable. The
Synology being used is in frequent daily use by an office full of people so
the sysadmin is understandably twitchy about doing anything that would have
even the slightest chance of breaking it!

Thanks to your earlier messages I've made progress, but I've now hit
another problem. I've got a new set of parameters being called:
ffmpeg -i
../fromAnima/Shots/animation_194_20181204/E113_SEQ070_SH0070_anim_r002.mov
-c:v png -vframes 1 -f rawvideo
../media/thumbnails/shots_internal/Screengrabs/E113_SEQ070_SH0070_anim_r002_0069.png
2>&1
And on Wampserver that I'm testing with, that will generate a PNG file. (I
can't seem to persuade it to do a JPEG but that's a different question for
later.)

However when I run the same command on the Synology, with the older FFmpeg
version (that I want to avoid updating if at all possible), it is failing
with the message:
"Error while opening decoder for input stream #0:0 : Operation not
permitted."
Strangely, it generates an output file in the correct path on the server,
but the file contains 0 bytes.

Google did throw up a forum topic about x264 not necessarily being
installed by default on the Synology, but when I prompt the FFmpeg on the
Synology to list the decoders, h264 is on the list- but could that still be
the issue?

Or is there some other difference that I'm not taking into account?

Some full outputs below.

Thanks again

Stuart

(Since the answer is well hidden:)

You can use the rawvideo muxer as a replacement for image2 as long
as you only write one frame:
-vcodec mjpeg -f rawvideo
-vcodec png -f rawvideo

Does this happen for every input file or only for this one?
Does the following succeed?
$ ffmpeg -i input -f null -

Please understand that there is a reason why we require you
to test current FFmpeg git head...

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but unfortunately this seems to have had
no effect. I've added the -vcodec flag so my command line looks like this:
"ffmpeg -i ..[input].mov -c:v png -vframes 1 -vcodec png -f rawvideo
[output].png 2>&1"
but the bottom line (literally) is still:
"Error while opening decoder for input stream #0:0 : Operation not
permitted"
I've pasted the full output below.

On Sun, 6 Jan 2019 at 12:21, Carl Eugen Hoyos <[hidden email]> wrote:

I had tried a selection of files from the same source.

After looking into this, it appears that the problem may be broader than I
first thought. Trying to throughput an MP4 to a different MP4 also fails,
also creating the output file but exiting while the file contains 0 bytes.
So for example if I try this simple query:
"ffmpeg -i [input].mp4 -y [output].mp4 2>&1"
it's also failing, but with a different error message:
"Error while opening encoder for output stream #0:0 - maybe incorrect
parameters such as bit_rate, rate, width or height"

So perhaps the image extraction specifics aren't the problem and there's a
broader issue with FFmpeg being unable to encode anything?

Please understand that there is a reason why we require you

I absolutely appreciate that and if it were easy to do so, I would update
straight away. My tests have been on the latest version, but I'm not the
sysadmin of the server in question, and the sysadmin is nervous about
making changes on a live and very active server, so I need to exhaust all
the possibilities for what might work with the 2015 build before I can say
it has to be updated.

Thanks again

Stuart

Installing an additional binary shouldn't affect existing stuff in any
way.

And if it's a tool you require to get your work done properly, a
sysadmin should be supportive.

Just saying... Pure theory in most every workplace though. ;-)

(And no, installing latest ffmpeg will not add security risks. Using a
very old one is more risky.)
