FLV to H264: Which bitrates to you suggest?

Giskard
Hi all,

I'm transcoding:

Input #0, flv, from 'test.flv':
  Duration: 00:03:54.5, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 64 kb/s
  Stream #0.0: Video: flv, yuv420p, 320x240, 30.00 fps(r)
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 22050 Hz, mono, 64 kb/s

to H264 using libx264 for video and libfaac for audio, keeping the same
video resolution and framerate.

Which bitrate settings for video / audio would you suggest for video and
audio in this case in order to keep a good quality?

Many thanks,
Michael

Hi,
if you don't care about bitrate constraints you could use -sameq or
-qscale with a low value (e.g. -qscale 1) (VBR encoding).

HTH, regards.

Please try to use a reasonably recent version of ffmpeg before asking
questions to ffmpeg-user: older versions aren't supported here!

Many thanks. Bitrate / file size do - unfortunately - represent a
constraint. I did some experimentation and found out that with VBR and a
quantiser between 25 and 30 I'm getting visually equal results compared
to the source video, i.e., I can't see any additional artefacts. At the
same time the file size is about 1/3rd smaller than the FLV ... not bad :-).

Did you make the same experience? Which quantiser do you use for libx264?

Many thanks,
Michael
