Basic ffmpeg user - issues converting

Kassim Massop
Hi there community,

I have recently discovered ffmpeg and am trying to use it to convert &
compress my raw footage from an Atomos device.

When using the most basic command (ffmpeg -i source.mov output.mov) I get
the below error in "basic command"

After some googling I found using the copy command can fix this so I used
the following command (ffmpeg -i source.mov -acodec copy output.mov) which
converted successfully but the output video file is unplayable in any video
player (error from VLC - Codec not supported:VLC could not decode the
format "aivx" (No description for this codec)).

What am I doing wrong here? Also what would be the best command to run to
reduce filesize and keep the quality as high as possible for 1080p/60 &
4k/60 respectivley (whilst keeping the 10 audio channels)?

This is a surprising error in this context:
Please provide "ffmpeg -i" console output for your output file.

You can test with small values for crf.

I wonder how you are going to play back 10 channel audio?
Does vlc support your input file / the audio of your input file?

Re: Basic ffmpeg user - issues converting

Kassim Massop
Hi there,

Yes VLC plays back the original unconverted file without issues.

In regards to your request I am a beginner user so bear with me if I get it
wrong.

I assume you want me to run "ffmpeg -i outputfile"

I did this and got the below (my output file is called output.mov)

What does it do with the ten-channel audio?
(This is not related to the video issue that you saw so far, I just
wonder how to read and play ten audio channels.)

Yes, thank you.

Afaict, there is a bug in FFmpeg;-(

Can you provide a source file that you used to produce this file?

Please do not top-post here, Carl Eugen

Re: Basic ffmpeg user - issues converting

Kassim Massop
Thanks for the response,

I am unable to share the files as they are HUGE, the smallest segment which
is 2 minutes long is 30GB. I dont have the means to record a new 4k segment
as I do not have a 4k monitor here.

I can tell you that if I record a 1080p video the conversion seems to work
so something to do with the video size is causing this bug.

In regards to the audio channels on the original video I actually cannot
hear it when I play, I assume it has something to do with video size as VLC
needs to keep buffering the video every few seconds.

What do you mean by not top-posting? I am just doing "reply all" to the
email, is this not how I should be responding?

Let me know.

Thanks

Maybe you could share the first 25MB and the last 10 MB and tell
us the exact filesize?

Maybe the speed parameter of vlc allows testing.

What are the ten sound channels supposed to contain?

No.

I trimmed 1 second from the beggining and its still 200MB, link to the file
is below

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l4seemgi3z38ueq/trim.mov?dl=0

The exact size of the original file is  1.MOV - 29,094,005KB This issue
occurs on all the files I recorded at 4k, the sizes are listed below

2.MOV - 311,185,558KB
4.MOV - 41,987,648KB
5.MOV - 121,165,767KB
